Thanksgiving is upon us...

It's hard to believe that Thanksgiving is here again! This past year has flown by. It feels like just yesterday Ricky and I were fixing our very first Thanksgiving meal in our home with some of our family here visiting. That was a wonderful time, especially since the turkey turned out great!

This Thanksgiving we get to spend it in Memphis. Ricky and I haven't been back to Memphis since the week before Easter, so it's been awhile! We are ready for a "get out of town trip." I am so thankful that all of our immediate families are in Memphis. And they all live less than 3 miles of one another!

Thanksgiving is a time to reflect and be thankful of everything you have. As I reflect, here is a little list of what I am thankful for, even the little things are so precious now a days!

A Mini Vacation

Last weekend Ricky and I went on a mini vacation. It was a much needed one. We have both been very busy and stressed so it was fun to get out of town for the weekend.

We went to Des Moines, Iowa. We had never been in Iowa so it was fun to go and of course buy another spoon to add to our collection. The reason for our trip was a Taekwondo tournament that was being held there. Ricky wanted to participate in it so we decided to just make a weekend vacation out of the trip.

I didn't want to participate in it, just wanted to watch. And of course watching was just fine with me, I love to just sit and people watch. I was also busy taking pictures and video of the tournament when it was Rickys turn. They break the tournament down into different categories depending if you are male, female, age and belt color. So in Rickys category he did three different things while we were there. He preformed a form, he broke boards, and then he sparred someone. He got second place in forms and third place in board breaking. We were both very pleased considering it was his first time and we were new at all of this. The tournament was pretty much an all day Saturday event. We got there in the morning and didn't leave until around 4. It was really neat to watch others do different things, especially the black belts. For the rest of the weekend we went shopping! :) We also finally ate at a Fudruckers. Its is a really good hamburger place. All in all it was a good trip.

In other news, this upcoming weekend at our church we are having a Women's Ministry event called Harvest Celebration. It is a luncheon for the ladies and I am on the decorating team for this event. It is just me and another lady. It has been a lot of fun. We had to get decorations for the outside and then centerpieces for the tables. We are not making all the centerpieces the same we will have 4 tables that have fresh floral arrangments in really pretty containers that we found at hobby lobby. 4 other tables will have big candle holders and we are going to wrap leaves around the base. It is hard to explain, hopefully I will get some pictures of it all.

And to leave on this note, I know we are all disappointed at the outcome of the election but just remember that God is in control and the begining and end of times are in his hands. Ricky has this Bible verse on his facebook status and I love this verse. So I leave you with the words from, Isaiah 41:10 "So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

Recommendations...

I have some recommendations to make for movies and books. I have been on a kick lately on bittersweet romances. I didn't really plan it that way, it has just happened. I recently finished reading the book Dear John, by Nicholas Sparks. It is probably my favorite of his books so far. I highly recommend it.



I just recently watched the move Miss Potter. It has Renee Zellweger and Ewan McGregor in it. It is a movie about the life of Beatrix Potter, the famous childrens author of The Tale of Peter Rabbit and many others. It was a very good movie. I learned alot about her. I highly recommend it.




Next, I somehow have gone on living my life without ever reading or seeing the movie Pride and Prejudice. I know go ahead and gasp with unbelief! Well I can't believe what I have been missing all these years! I highly recommend this movie as well. I know there is a 5 hour version out that, but I'm not sure if I could sit through that.



Finally, the next one is not a romance story at all, but it was a very good movie. I learned about history in this movie, it was slow in some parts but it was very fascinating learning about Jesse James. It is good I know of this history since he was shot right here in St. Joseph, MO and because Ricky is related to him. So I highly recommend this movie too!

28 years...

The month of October for the Gipson household is a busy one filled with birthdays and anniversaries. Lots of family members birthdays, friends birthdays and friends and parents anniversaries.

I was swamped with birthday cards, gifts, phone calls, and emails this year for my birthday! I am so blessed with great friends and family! Thank you so much!

This year my birthday was on a Friday so I actually got to celebrate with friends on my actual birthday. It feels like when you have to wait till the weekend to celebrate when you birthday falls during the week, is just not the same as actually celebrating on the day of!

Ricky and I and some great friends we have made here celebrated by going into KC to Buca Di Beppo for my birthday. It's a wonderful Italian family style restaurant! Their salad is to die for! We had a blast, some of our friends had never been, so it was fun to introduce them to the place.

After eating, we walked around and went shopping. We got a little crazy in one store looking at stocking stuffers. Some pretty odds gifts. Such as some really weird motorcycle goggles that of course, we all had to try on. We had tears we were laughing so hard. After making a scene in the store (which no one offered to help us that worked there, wonder why?!!?) we headed down to the Cheesecake Factory for dessert. Can never go wrong with cheesecake. All in all it was a great night spent with friends and laughing the night away!

Other news....

Ricky and I received our blue belts. So we are training for our high blue belts now.

Soon, Ricky and I will be going on a little weekend vacation to Cedar Rapids, Iowa for a Taekwondo tournament. I will just be watching but Ricky wants to participate. It's only about 2 hours away from us but we are making it a small little get away for us.

The food that I received from the Angel Food Ministry has been wonderful! We have only been dissapointed in the bratwurst but everything has been great. We had some of the steaks last night and they were so delicious! So if you have access to an Angel Food Ministry I highly recommend it.

Oh speaking of good deals. I can't remember how I found this website and I haven't purchased anything yet, but it is makeup and most of it is only $1. It's called E.L.F Makeup. Stands for eyes, lips, face. So check it out.

The weather here is really cool now. The leaves are changing pretty colors and I haven't had the air conditioner on for a good 3 weeks now, no heat on either. So our bill is gonna be a good one!

The latest.....

Here is the latest in the Gipson household.

We participated in a "Catan-a-thon" last weekend. We have been addicted to the Settlers of Catan board game and have spread this madness around people at our church. We got enough people playing and buying the game we were able to have a "Catan-a-thon" which is a little complicated but it was so much fun! We had 3 different boards, 15 people, so we have 5 teams of 3. We would rotate boards every 20 min. some rotated clockwise, while others rotated counterclockwise, that way we played with different people every time we changed boards. We even had a friend of our make iron on's for everyone to put on a t-shirt and wear it that night. It was cool to see everyone in the same shirt. We had so much fun, Ricky has already design the next t-shirt for our 2nd annual Catan-a-thon. Yes, we know that we are addicted to this game. It has just been fun making friends that can be just as "dorky" as we are!

I (Ashley) have been participating in the Wednesday nights Awanas program at church. I work with the cubbies which is preschool age. Kids that are 3 and 4 years old. I know a lot of the kids so that helps. I get to play secretary at the beginning to check them in for the night and then I listen to their verses that they memorize each week. There are 4 different rooms they go into that night, rotating. So when they come to my class all they do is color and say their verse. If they can say it, I sign off on it and give them a sticker. The other rooms they go to are craft, games and story time. We get about 7 kids every time we rotate. So normally, we have around 30 kids each week. Now it has been a ton of fun, because kids say the funniest things. The first night a little boy just randomly told me that he took a bath! Then one boy said, "My mom isn't going to have anymore babies!" And a girl piped in saying, "Yea, my mom can't either she has something in her tummy, so she can't." One little boy wasn't acting right and he just told me that he was pouting. He just kept repeating, "I'm pouting, I'm pouting" I have been having a ton of fun with those kids....especially that age!


Tonight we had our Taekwondo testing tonight. We are currently high green belts and we tested for our blue belt tonight. They normally test by what color you are currently. And sometimes they go from lowest to highest. Tonight they mixed it up a bit and started with green belts first so Ricky and I got to go first. I liked it because I got it out of the way and could just relax, sit back and watch everyone else test. It wasn't just Ricky and I testing for blue belt, there were about 7 other people with us testing at the same time. It helps to have several people up there with you.


This weekend we are "Serving St. Joe." Our church is having a garage sale on Sat. for the needy. Then on Sunday we are just having one service and after the service everyone is eating lunch at the church. Then we are separating into teams and going to houses and fixing the houses up. Our team has about 20 people on it and we are going to be painting the outside of a house. So busy weekend for us.

Alright, I think that is about it for now. I'm excited about gas prices around here. Today I only paid 2.65 a gallon for gas! I just hope it keeps going down, down, down!

Angel Food Ministry

If you know me, then you know that I love to save money!! Our church participates in the monthly Angel Food Ministry and I kept hearing about it and how great it was. The fact that there are no qualifications and all you pay is $30 and you get a lot of food. Several people at my church told me that it was worth it. So I decided to try it, especially with gas prices going up and now even in the grocery store just about everything has at least gone up about .20 cents!! Which adds up pretty quickly! I have been so excited about getting this food because it was only $30. I have been counting down the days until today, to when I could go pick it up :)

I am basically writing this post for all those that have been interested in doing it as well. I know my mom was curious and Annie (well, mainly Josh) :) were interested too! So I went to pick it up today and I took a picture for all of you to see. The "menu" changes every month so you don't get the same food every month.

This month's "menu" (which is what I got) included: frozen green beans, frozen vegetable stir fry, dry pinto beans, pork and beans, mac and cheese, chicken fried rice, cookies, eggs, milk, frozen pizza, frozen pork loin fillet, 4 frozen steaks, frozen chicken, frozen chicken nuggets, frozen ground beef, frozen cheese bratwursts, and frozen french fries. Now hopefully all this food will be good! I will get to expand my cooking skills as well. Seeing as I have never fixed a pork loin fillet and I'm not sure if I know how. I have never cooked with any kind of dry beans so that will be a new one as well. They gave me next month's menu when I went and it looks like some good stuff too!

I don't know a lot about the Angel Food Ministry but I think proceeds go to some of our local apartments here in town. (Please correct me if I'm wrong Micah or Tracy if you are reading this)
So you get a lot of food for a great price and then it also helps others out.

Well have a great weekend everyone! We are going on a group date night (no kids) with some friends and I can't wait, it's gonna be fun!

Lions, and Tigers, and Bears......

.....Oh My! :) We finally got to go visit the Omaha Zoo in Nebraska. We had heard from so many people that we should go check it out because it is amazing. In fact they also told us to make a weekend out of it because it is so large it is hard to see it all in one day. We thought during the summer to go up there but we decided to go camping instead. I am glad we did because our church has been doing activities all summer and one of them was to visit this zoo. So we signed right up for that event. The first 30 people to sign up got to ride on the church bus up there. We made it on the list and I was excited considering we didn't have to pay for gas or put miles on our car. It is about a 2 hour drive up there. The catch was we had to arrive at the church on a Saturday at 7:00 a.m. Well if you know the Gipsons, you know that we wait for the sun to come up, way up, before we rise out of our bed. Thankfully though, out of excitement I didn't have much of a problem getting up at 5:30 and getting ready, nor did Ricky. You read that correctly, nor did Ricky! :)

So we arrived at the Zoo and our Pastor gave the agenda for the day and said it would be impossible to try to all stay together. So everyone could just go where ever they wanted with no agenda. So we all get our tickets and stand outside the gate until they opened. Ricky and I were already overwhelmed because we really didn't know what to see first. So we headed to the Jungle they have there. A lot of the exhibits are indoors and are themed, and are amazing! Like you are really there and some animals are free to roam. We headed to the Jungle and were amazed right when we walked in. There are several levels and it looks like a real Jungle. We were taking our time walking around it and look across the way and see our Pastor and his family. We ended up catching up with them a few minuets later. I am so thankful that we did because they knew their way around the zoo. We hung out with them the rest of the day. I am glad we did because we got to know them a little better and they are a lot of fun! Pastor Micah was good about keeping us moving along because we were trying to see the whole zoo in one day.

We took about a 30 min. lunch break with everyone from church back on our bus around noon. Great idea to bring our own lunches and save money! After lunch we headed back in the zoo and saw amazingly the rest of the zoo! We were there from 9-5 and saw the whole place and that was almost in a whirlwind, not many breaks and we kept moving. I'm glad we did so that Ricky and I could take it all in and see it all. Now the next time we go back we can take more time and see more of our favorites. Other than an indoor jungle, they have the largest indoor desert exhibit, a butterfly exhibit, and an aquarium exhibit. Those are all the indoor things, but there are still of animals outdoor to see. So needless to say we had a blast and were exhausted when we got back home later that night! I was in the bed falling asleep at 10 p.m.

Let the Fall begin....

It looks as if fall has arrived in St. Joe. I don't know if I was quite ready for it, so maybe there will be a few more days of warm weather. At this point I think I have given up trying to figure out the weather in this crazy town!

We have been blessed this summer by having all of our immediate families come and visit us. We wrapped the summer up with the Gipson's visiting us. We had a fun time, very short, they were only here a weekend, but it was fun time. It was nice and relaxing just hanging out and catching up on our lives. And of course we taught them our infamous game, Settler's of Catan. I think it is safe to say that they are addicted now as well. While they were here we also took them to the miniture golf place to play. Below is a picture of the men. It was men verses the women and sadly I will admit that the men blew us out of the water.
The last night they were here we enjoyed hanging outside during the early evening and we even helped them with their homework. It reminded me that I DO NOT miss school!! Below is a picture of us doing homework.
All in all it was a fun weekend. I will update a little later on our adventure to the Omaha Zoo with our church and will share some pictures from there as well.

As far as upcoming events in the Gipson household we have church events, a catan-a-thon coming up, and of course taekwondo testing sometime soon.

Where did the Summer go?

The summer has just flown by! I feel like just a few days ago we were shoveling snow from our driveway. Now when I say we, what I really mean is Ricky :)

The summer was great. Families got to come and visit and we even have some coming this weekend, so that's exciting! We got to go to Worlds of Fun, to our local water park, bowling for a cause, saw movies, went camping and of course played tons and tons of "Settler's of Catan" board game, of course with all the expansion packs with our friends. We have gotten closer to some good friends from church so that has been a lot of fun!

The joys of being a homeowner also took their toll on us this summer. We were going to use our incentive check from the government to build a deck, however our air conditioner wasn't working for a bit. So we thought we were going to have to purchase a new one. Fortunately, I found a really trustworthy AC man and he fixed it for us. We still just put that money in savings cause we just don't know about are AC, it is original to the house so it is at least 25 years old. We just recently had to replace a spring on Ricky's garage door. We haven't yet but we need to do some repair work on a front porch/stairs. Some of the concrete has fallen off, it looks like it has been patched before, so that's are next step. I have decided I really don't know if I like being an adult. Can one be an adult without those responsibilities?

Don't get me wrong, I really love the house we are in and it is the perfect size. It could be much worse. It's just it seems like there is always something to do to it, but I guess that's with everyone.

Fall's coming up pretty soon, so that means, lots of leaves to rake, my birthday, Pumkin Fest, eating pumkin seeds, cooler weather, and Thanksgiving!

Family Visit

We had a great time with family this past week! It went by too fast but it was fun.

We took them shopping, eating out, to the insane asylum museum, swimming, our testing for our high green belt and shopping/eating in Kansas City.

While they were here we celebrated our 4 year anniversary and Ricky's mom's birthday. It has been a fast 4 years of marriage! And we were saying if someone had told me 4 years ago on our wedding day that in 4 years I would be living in St. Joseph, MO and testing for my high green belt on my anniversary, I would have just laughed and said I haven't even heard of St. Joseph, MO. How times flies!

Getting paid to shop...

Hey Everyone,

I can't believe it is almost August! It feels like yesterday we were shoveling snow off the driveway!

Ricky and I are getting excited because this weekend his family is coming to visit us for a week. We always have a great time with them. I'm sure I will have some pictures to share a little later.

Also this weekend our church is participating in the Beth Moore Simulcast. I am excited about that. I have signed up to help work at this event in our church. I am on the setup/cleanup crew and on the follow up team. Setup/cleanup is self explanatory but the follow up team you might have questions. As did I. Basically we will follow up on the visitors that come to the Simulcast. By writing them a note or calling them a little later on in the week. In addition to that, if someone goes forward during the invitations, we are to follow them down and help them out. Is anyone else doing the Simulcast at their church?? I know a bunch of Bellevue people are going to the actual place that she will be at in Louisville, KY.

Alright so at this point you are thinking what does the title of this blog have anything to do with what I am reading? I am fixing to answer your question. My boss has also commented about how she just loves my earrings that I wear. She is always asking where I get them. Well today she said that she would pay me gas money, $20, and of course pay for the earrings, if I went earring shopping for her. Well what girl can turn down shopping?!?! So of course I said sure! So I'm going to get paid to shop for earrings!

I guess thats all for now. We are testing for our high green belt next week, so Rickys family will get to see that. We are green belts now and the next level up is just high green. You keep the same belt but you get to add a stripe to your belt and that makes you high green.

Lets paint......and camp!

Hello Everyone!

Raise your hand if you have busy lately? The Gipson's hands are up!

We have been busy, busy, busy. We had a neighborhood garage sale earlier this summer and decided to participate and sell some things. Including our couches and desk that were down in our basement. Well we did pretty good at the garage sale. We got rid of the couches and purchased a nice futon for the basement. Since the couches were gone we thought, well now would be a great time to paint the basement. (We have been wanting to do it since we moved in) We also wanted to rearrange the room. So we got our paint brushes and went to town! Goodbye wood paneling! We haven't completed the room yet, we are done painting and have the big furniture in place but we still need to organize the little things. So there will be after pictures shortly. Here are some pictures of the painting process.

Now time for camping. The same week were finishing up with the basement was the same week we were trying to get organized and ready for our camping trip that we had planned. We wanted to take a vacation this summer and when we started pricing places, like big cities far away the costs of everything were crazy!! So we thought well we both love camping and it's a lot cheaper, so there ya go. Next thing I know we are making reservations at a state park that is about an hour away from us. It is Watkins Mill State Park in Lawson, MO. We left this past Sunday and planned to stay until Wednesday. Now Ricky and I had never been camping just the two of us. It has always been with family or friends. So I was looking forward to some bonding time with Ricky! So the park is wonderful, beautiful, woodsy, we have the perfect spot, a lake for Seminole. It was great. We pitched our tent and went exploring. It was a lot of fun just the two of us, really good quality time. I would not trade it for the world.

Then a little bit of a downfall happened. We began to discover a lot of ticks! In just a two day period Ricky had found 5 ticks on him. Just one that had attached and the rest he found in time before they did. I found one on me, just walking, not attached. We saw them on our tent (on the outside thankfully) and we had to pull one out of Seminole. So after just two days and two nights of camping we decided to come home a day early. We were tired of the ticks!! Or should I say we were ticked off at the ticks!! I know that when you camp there are going to be bugs, and ticks. But Ricky has camped a lot in his day and never encountered this many in this short of a time. On top of that we know the affects of Lyme disease from a tick bite. A girl had that at our church in high school and we always heard of the horrible things the disease does. So we aren't fond of ticks!

So besides of the ticks the camping was great and we had a great time with each other! I leave you with some pictures of our short camping experience. Enjoy!

from the brand "Life is Good" if anyone is familiar with that. So we had to take them camping and of course get a picture :)

We went on a hike around the lake at the state park. The entire thing around is 3.75 miles. Halfway through we found a nice little creek, apparently Seminole was really worn out and hot so he decided to just lay in the water awhile.

Our campsite....it was wonderful. We were at the end of a cove and we just had someone on the right of us but no site on the left so it was great!

Beth Moore, Swimming and Jazz....

So I can't believe how busy Ricky and I have gotten over the year and half of living in St. Joseph.
It is totally amazing to me that being taken away from my comfort zone in Memphis, that I have become more outgoing, and confident. I guess for the shear fact that you more or less have to be when you are in a new environment and you do not know a soul. Ricky and I do more things here than we ever did in Memphis. Extra activities that is. I am just so blessed that we are on this adventure in our lives here in St. Joseph, and can't wait to see where God takes us next.

This weekend was busy for me. I went to a Women's Ministry Retreat with our church Friday night through Saturday morning. We did a Beth Moore "retreat in a box". The study we did was "Loving Well". It was really good...we watched a video on it, and she was hilarious! We did the retreat at a local hotel here and we stayed a night. I roomed with some ladies from my Sunday School class. It was a lot of fun getting to know them a little better. Saturday the retreat ended at noon and I was exhuasted because we stayed up late chatting the night before. Thinking I was going to get a good nap when I got home, I was excited.

When I got home and went outside the weather was gorgeous. It was warm but there was a breeze and no humidity. I suggested to Ricky that we need to take Seminole swimming so after lunch we headed to the swimming hole :) Seminole had a blast! We also planned later that night to go to a Jazz Festival downtown. We went last year and had fun visiting with everyone from Ricky's work. Well on the way back from the swimming hole some of a good friends called us and said that they had just purchased a hutch from Target but couldn't fit in their car. Luckily we were really close and stopped by to put it in our car. It was a sight to see because poor Seminole had to lay on the floorboard in the back and didn't have much room because the hutch took up the entire back of the car. So we went to there house and stayed a good while, having fun chatting and of course saying quotes from our new favorite movie "Kungfu Panda!!" (side note: everyone must go see this movie, it is sooooooo funny!!) From leaving there house we came home freshened up, went to dinner and then to the Jazz Festival and didn't get home until late that night. So much for my Saturday afternoon nap!! :) But it was worth it, we had a great day!

A Busy Week

We just had a really busy, but fun past week. My parents came to visit for the week. We got to do a lot of things.

We all went to Worlds of Fun for a day. They came to our Taek won do practices and our test. Ricky and I were testing for our green belts. We taught them the game Settlers of Catan. They are now hooked on the game as well. They helped us go futon shopping and buy one for our basement downstairs. Thank goodness my dad had a truck so we were able to haul it and then he helped Ricky put it together. They went to church with us and were able to hear our pastor preach. We have been wanting them to hear him because we are really enjoying his preaching and we really like the church that we can call home now. They also got to hang out with some of our friends for a night of game playing and of course eating :o)

So yea, we're bloggin'

So this is the first ever official blog post by the one and only Ricky Gipson. I don't know how many times you'll see me blogging on this thing, so savor it while it lasts. I'm not exactly sure what I'm suppose to be blogging about, but I guess if I ramble on long enough I'll have typed enough to make people stop reading before they get to the end.

Ashley's parents are still here in St. Joe. They will be traveling to Bethany, MO tomorrow for our taekwondo testing. Ashley and I will be testing for our green belts. Hopefully everything will go smoothly and we will pass with flying colors. Since Ashley's parents are there I'm sure we will have plenty of pictures to show off.

Garage Sale and Parents

Well we made it through the garage sale! I don't know why I took a shower before the sale because I had to take one again afterwards....it was hot! We made some mula, not as much as I hoped but it's better than nothing. It was fun to have friends there to hang out and help sell their things as well.

So my parents are coming into town today! We are excited, they are just coming for a vacation for once, we aren't putting them to work! :o) The other times they have come it has been to help us move. We are planning on going to World's of Fun, teaching them Settlers of Catan and just hanging out so that will be fun.

Well I'm spent, didn't get much sleep last night and then had to get up for the garage sale so that's it for now folks! Have a great weekend!

Hi everyone!

Well Ricky doesn't know it yet but we are now bloggers. I have noticed that it seems everyone has a blog these days and its an easy way for family and friends to get the scoop on our lives. It seems as if everyone is so far away from one another, so this is a simple way of feeling just a little closer to family and friends.

As I mentioned before Ricky doesn't know that we are bloggers. Ricky is away this weekend on a camping/fishing/canoeing trip with some guys from his work. He is in southern Missouri just about 5 hours away from here and Memphis. He was really excited about this trip seeing as it is just guys and its more than just doing the normal camping thing.

As for me this weekend, I'm taking it easy. I have been under the weather this past week so I'm just being lazy. Next weekend our neighborhood is having a garage sale so this weekend I am planning on going through closets and digging things out that we want to sale. We are planning on selling the couches in our basement, and our computer desk down there too. Those couches down there are on their last leg. They have been good to us though, they started their lives at the home of Brandon's parents house. They made their way to Ashley and Brandon when they got married and then they passed them down to Ricky and I when we got married. So like I said they are on their last leg. We are planning on just getting a nice futon for down there and buying another dog bed to put down there for Seminole to lay on.

Other exciting news is that next weekend my parents are coming up to visit for a week. That will be fun. They are going to get to see us at Taek won do practice and test for our green belt.

I will probably be doing most of the blogging on here and I can't wait to continue it. I'm sure there will be pictures soon to add to this blog. Take care everyone!
